Standard 3.3L Ti-VCT V6 Engine

The Ford F-150 is standardly powered by a 3.3L Ti-VCT V6 engine. This allows you to reach vigorous speeds with 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. Although it comes equipped with a 4×2 system, 4×4 capabilities are available. Depending on which one you choose will affect fuel economy ratings:

• 4×4: EPA-estimated 19 city / 22 highway / 20 combined MPG

This 4×4 system, available on every trim level, makes it possible to take the fun off the pavement. However, the rougher the terrain, the more fuel you’ll use.

Available 2.7L EcoBoost® V6 Engine

Next up in the Ford F-150 MPG lineup is the 2.7L EcoBoost® V6 engine. Ford is known for its EcoBoost® engines, which give you the power and gas mileage you want to see. This powertrain generates 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque while offering the following fuel economy ratings:

• 4×2: EPA-estimated 20 city / 26 highway / 22 combined MPG
• 4×4: EPA-estimated 19 city / 24 highway / 21 combined MPG

This engine can also be paired with the available Payload Package. Opting for this package will maximize your payload capabilities with this model but will slightly affect your fuel economy ratings.

Available 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 Engine

The 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine is available with a generous 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque for even more strength under the hood. Like the previous engine, this powertrain can be paired with 4×4, as well as the Payload Package—giving you plenty of options to choose from:

• 4×2: EPA-estimated 17 city / 24 highway / 20 combined MPG
• 4×4: EPA-estimated 16 city / 22 highway / 19 combined MPG

Available 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 Engine

EcoBoost® technology returns in the next available engine, improving the gas mileage of the F-150 slightly once again. With 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, you’ll be able to hit the streets with ample power and save on fuel while you do it:

• 4×2: EPA-estimated 18 city / 24 highway / 20 combined MPG
• 4×4: EPA-estimated 18 city / 23 highway / 20 combined MPG

On top of its impressive fuel economy ratings, this engine is also responsible for the F-150’s maximum towing capacity. When properly equipped with this engine and other necessary towing features, the F-150 can tow up to 14,000 pounds of trailer weight.

Available 3.5L PowerBoost™ Full Hybrid V6 Engine

For the most fuel-efficient drive with the F-150, this is the engine for you. While still producing 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, you can achieve up to:

• 4×2: EPA-estimated 25 city / 25 highway / 25 combined MPG
• 4×4: EPA-estimated 23 city / 23 highway / 23 combined MPG

The enhanced efficiency of this engine comes from the fact that it’s a hybrid engine. Hybrids combine battery power and a gas engine to give you as much fuel economy as possible.

Available High-Output 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 Engine

For elevated capability and strength, opt for the available High-Output engine. This beast boasts 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque for a ride you won’t forget. However, with great power comes a slightly lessened fuel economy:

• Tremor 4×4: EPA-estimated 16 city / 20 highway / 18 combined MPG
• Raptor Trim 4×4: EPA-estimated 15 city / 18 highway / 16 combined MPG

Accompanying Equipment

While the engines of the F-150 are the stars of the show, they don’t work alone under the hood. In order to produce higher-than-average fuel economy, in addition to powerful performance output, these engines need to work together with a few key pieces of equipment.

Transmission Options

Standardly, the Ford F-150 comes equipped with a 10-speed transmission with great responsiveness, especially when operating at the low and mid ranges of the power band, which provides enhanced efficiency and power output. Plus, the extra gear spacing and drag-reduction make shifting effortless at all speeds.

The F-150 hybrid engine has its own version of this transmission with an integrated 33kW electric motor.

Selectable Drive Modes

The 10-speed automatic transmission also comes with five selectable drive modes to help you achieve your goals on the road or trails without sacrificing fuel. Choose from:

Normal Mode—This mode favors fuel economy and is ideal for everyday driving while you’re commuting to work or taking a long road trip. Every drive starts in this mode to ensure you’re getting the best fuel economy right from the get-go.

Tow/Haul Mode—This mode is designed to make towing your trailer as easy as possible. It delays the upshift of gears and slows the engine while going downhill to counteract the trailer’s weight.

Snow/Wet Mode—This mode helps give you the best grip possible, even when the ground beneath you is covered in snow or puddles of water. By delaying the acceleration of your engine, this mode minimizes the possibility of your tires slipping.

Eco Mode—This mode provides the best possible fuel economy for your F-150. By shifting the focus from power and performance, this mode can channel all the engine’s efforts into preserving fuel.

Sport Mode—This mode maximizes the fun you can have behind the wheel by engaging higher gears as much as possible and holding those gears as long as possible.
